Heart & Bone Health

The good news is there are many things we can do to promote a healthy heart and protect our bones. Here’s a list that can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  • Don’t smoke — Smoking is the single most preventable cause of many diseases, including heart disease.
  • Eat a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in fat, salt, and alcohol. Get lots of calcium and Vitamin D to protect your bones.
  • Exercise regularly — Brisk walking is an excellent choice and if you’re just starting an exercise program, walking is safe for most women.
  • Control high blood pressure and cholesterol — Have your health care provider check your blood pressure and cholesterol. The best way to keep these two factors in control is through diet and exercise. But if these are not effective, talk with your healthcare provider about medical options.
  • Control your weight — Radical weight fluctuations can put a lot of stress on the heart. If your weight has a tendency to go up and down, you may want to talk to your health care provider about a diet that would be best for you.
  • Reduce the effects of stress—for example, by practicing some type of relaxation technique, such as meditation or yoga. Physical exercise is also a good way to reduce stress.

Remember for a healthier heart and bones:

  • Don’t smoke
  • Eat a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Exercise regularly
  • Control high blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Control your weight
  • Reduce the effects of stress
