Responding to Resistance
There are lots of things you can do when your partner is resistant to prevention. It’s all about putting prevention in the right light. We have several suggestions for how to talk about prevention in a positive way that emphasizes values you likely share.
Here are a few tips:
- Make prevention sexy — incorporate condom use into your lovemaking by finding erotic ways to put condoms on. And remind him that you will feel less inhibited if you don’t have worries about STDs and unintended pregnancy in the back of your mind.
- Emphasize that it’s about health — yours and his. Prevention will not only protect your health, but also his. His participation in prevention is also a caring act he can perform to safeguard your health.
- Share information — give him pamphlets from your doctor or show him some reputable health websites that explain about risks of STDs and unintended pregnancy. Sometimes seeing information from a health care source or reliable website, such as the CDC site, shows men that your concern about health is validated by health care professionals.
- Remember you are worth protecting, and a caring man will want you to be protected from pregnancy and STDs.
