Living with an STD
If either you or your partner are living with a sexually transmitted infection, there are things you can do to protect yourself and your partner. Always use a condom when having vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Although this will not guarantee the STD will not be transmitted, it will greatly reduce that possibility. If the STD you have is herpes, abstain from vaginal, oral, and anal sex or use a condom during an active herpes outbreak. If it is a chronic condition, such as HIV or hepatitis C, always use condoms. And be sure to work closely with your health care provider and follow their recommendations.
