Unplanned Pregnancy Options

You have choices to make if you have an unintended pregnancy. You can choose to have the baby and raise the child, you can choose to have the baby and place the child for adoption, or you can choose to end the pregnancy. Only you can decide which choice is right for you.

Abortion
Abortion is a procedure used to terminate a pregnancy. There are two kinds of abortion available in the United States: surgical and medication. If you decide to end a pregnancy, your health care provider will talk with you about these different abortion methods.

Surgical abortion involves a medical procedure that terminates a pregnancy. It is safe and effective and available from many clinics and health centers throughout the United States. The cost of a surgical or medical abortion is $350-$700 in the first trimester.

Medication abortion involves taking medications to terminate an early pregnancy. It can be used up to 63 days into a woman’s pregnancy. It is safe and effective, can be done privately at your doctor’s office or at home rather than an abortion clinic, and for many women feels more like a natural miscarriage rather then a medical procedure.

Adoption
Adoption is another choice to consider following an unintended pregnancy. If you decide to have the baby, you can choose to place the baby for adoption. Talk to your health care provider about a referral to an agency or lawyer who specializes in helping women with the adoption process.

An unplanned pregnancy is a difficult issue for most women, and you must feel comfortable with what you decide. Talk to your health care provider about your medical options and talk to your trusted supports—friends, family, partner.
