How a Vasectomy is Performed

Vasectomy is a surgical method of permanent sterilization for men.

1. The surgical procedure is done in a doctor’s office, takes less than 30 minutes, and local anesthesia is given to help make the procedure less painful.

2. The procedure involves severing the vas deferens, tubes that carry sperm into a man’s ejaculate.

3. Following surgery some discoloration, swelling, and possibly bruising may occur; this disappears after a few days.

4. Some pain or discomfort may occur for several days following the procedure.

5. The man remains fertile for several ejaculations, and a follow-up test is required to ensure the surgery was successful.
