With most techniques, the surgery is effective immediately. Tubal ligations are more than 98% effective for preventing pregnancy. This procedure does not affect ovulation or your menstrual cycle.
Costs
Tubal ligation can be expensive if it is not covered by a health insurance plan. Tubal ligation as a sterilization method should be considered permanent. Even though there are surgeries to reverse tubal ligations, success is not guaranteed.
How It Works
Tubal ligations are surgical procedures done in a doctor’s office or clinic, but occasionally they require an overnight stay in the hospital. Recovery from the surgery takes about one week. The Essure® procedure is different because there is no cutting into the body. However, it takes three months before it becomes effective. After three months your doctor performs a confirmation test, a type of x-ray, to confirm that your tubes are completely blocked. Until that time you must use another form of birth control to ensure you do not become pregnant.
