How Implants Are Used

Implants are inserted by your health care provider during a clinic/office visit.

The manufacturer of the widely used Norplant implants has decided to discontinue making and marketing this method of birth control. Women who are currently using the Norplant implants, which last up to 5 years, can continue using them until their expiration date.

Another single rod implant, Implanon™ manufactured by N V Oranon, USA Inc., is now available. It lasts up to three years. Women still using the Norplant implants may want to consider switching to the Implanon™ implant or to other contraceptive options.

1. A single matchstick-sized rod is inserted during a simple and straightforward procedure that takes about one minute and is preformed by your health care provider.

2. The inside surface of a woman’s upper arm is sterilized and a local anesthetic is used to numb the area.

3. Using a special applicator, the doctor inserts the Implanon™ rod under the skin. Once implanted, you should not be able to see it. It is effective for three years.
