Implants
What is a Contraceptive Implant?
Contraceptive Implants are a hormonal method of birth control. The method involves inserting thin capsules filled with a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone under the skin of the upper arm. A small amount of hormone is released at a steady rate into the body, preventing the ovaries from releasing any eggs. Without any eggs being produced you can’t get pregnant.
How effective is the Contraceptive Implant?
The Contraceptive Implant is a very effective contraceptive method. Less than 1 out 100 women will get pregnant each year if using the Implant.
Will the Implant protect against STDs?
No. To protect against STDs, you will need to use either a male and female condom along with the Implant.
What about Convenience?
There are several advantages to the Implant. First, the Implant can remain in place for 3 to 5 years! So no worrying about taking a pill every day or getting a shot every 3 months. And the Implant can be removed at any time if you decide you want to get pregnant or you want to change to a different birth control method. Also, it is a hormonal method of birth control that can be used by women who can’t take estrogen because it uses the hormone progesterone.
Where can I get the Implant?
The Contraceptive Implant must be inserted by a health care provider.
