How Injections Are Used

Injections are administered by a health care provider during an office visit. Two types of injections can be used to prevent unintended pregnancy; they differ in terms of frequency.

Monthly Injections
1. The first injection is given within the first five days of the onset of a menstrual period. If a woman has had a first trimester abortion, the first injection is given within five days of the abortion. Following the birth of a baby if the mother is NOT breast-feeding, the first injection is given after a minimum of four weeks following delivery. If the mother is breast-feeding, the first injection is given six weeks after delivery.
2. Shots are given once a month.
3. Shots are administered in the arm, thigh, or buttocks.

12-week Injections
1. The first injection is given during the first five days of a normal menstrual cycle. Following the birth of a baby if the mother is NOT breast-feeding, the first injection is given during the first five days postpartum. If the mother is breast-feeding, the first injection is given six weeks after delivery.
2. Shots are given every 12 weeks (3 months).
3. Shots are administered in the arm, thigh, or buttocks.
