More Information about the Contraceptive Patch

Effectiveness
The contraceptive patch is a highly effective, weekly hormonal birth control method that is worn on the skin. The patch combines the effectiveness of the birth control pill with the convenience of once-a-week dosing. When used correctly and consistently, the patch is more than 99% effective.

How It Works
The contraceptive patch releases continuous levels of synthetic estrogen and progesterone, which are very much like the hormones made by a woman’s ovaries. The hormones are released from the patch through the skin to the bloodstream. Like birth control pills, the hormones released by the patch prevent ovulation, which means that the ovary does not release an egg to be fertilized.

Side Effects
Similar to other oral contraceptives, the side effects associated with the patch are not serious, and occur infrequently. Women who use hormonal contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke. Hormonal contraceptives are not for everybody, and women with a history of heart attack, stroke, or high blood pressure should talk to their health care professional about alternative contraceptive methods.
