More Information about Birth Control Pills

Effectiveness
Birth control pills, also known as oral contraceptives, are one of the most effective methods of preventing pregnancy (more than 99% effective) when used correctly and consistently.

How It Works
Birth control pills mimic the raised hormone levels that are normally present during pregnancy. While a woman is pregnant she usually does not release any more eggs. Since the raised hormone levels make the body “think” it is pregnant, no eggs are released that can become fertilized. When a woman stops taking birth control pills, ovulation and egg production will begin again normally, allowing her to get pregnant.

Side Effects
Oral contraceptives have been widely used for more than 30 years and are considered very safe for most women. Older women, women who smoke, and women with a family history of strokes and other blood clotting disorders may not be good candidates for birth control pills. As always, women should discuss their options with their health care provider.
