Birth Control Pills
What are Birth Control Pills?
Birth Control Pills (“the pill”) come in many different varieties, but they all work about the same way. They usually contain forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are naturally produced in all women; however, taking the pill raises the amount of these hormones in the body. The hormones in the pill keep the woman’s body from releasing an egg from the ovary. They also thicken the mucus in cervix which blocks sperm and prevents it from reaching an egg.
How effective is The Pill?
Birth Control Pills are a very effective contraceptive method. The Pill is most effective when taken correctly—taken every day, at about the same time every day. If used correctly, 1 out 100 women will get pregnant each year if they always take The Pill each day as directed.
Will The Pill protect against STDs?
No, like all hormonal methods of contraception, Birth Control Pills do not protect against STDs. To protect against STDs, you will need to use either a male and female condom along with The Pill.
What about Convenience?
If you are used to taking a daily medication, taking Birth Control Pills will be very easy. Simply take one tablet at about the same time every day.
Where can I get Birth Control Pills?
Birth Control Pills are prescribed by health care providers in combination with a physical examination, a complete medical history, and require a prescription. Prescriptions for Birth Control Pills can be filled at a pharmacy.
