What is Spermicide?

Spermicides are creams, gels, or suppositories (tablets that dissolve when inserted into the vagina) that contain a chemical which kills sperm. They are often used in combination with a barrier method of contraception, like the diaphragm or cervical cap.

How effective is Spermicide?

Used by itself, Spermicide is not a very effective method of contraception. However, used along with another method, such as a diaphragm, female or male condom, it’s effectiveness is greatly increased.

Will Spermicide protect against STDs?

No, Spermicides do not protect against STDs. For STD protection you will want to use a latex male condom or a female condom along with the Spermicide.

What about Convenience?

Spermicides are used at the time of sexual intercourse or applied to barrier methods such as the diaphragm prior to insertion.

Where can I get Spermicide?

Spermicides can be bought without prescriptions at pharmacies, drug stores and some supermarkets. Some condoms contain a coating of spermicidal lubricant.
