Effectiveness
Male condoms are one of the more adequate methods to prevent pregnancy. They are up to 99% effective when used correctly and consistently (every time you have sex). However, if male condoms are not stored or used properly, the latex of the condom will break down after a period of time and not be as effective. Storing condoms in places that are too warm will speed up this process. Male condoms have expiration dates to help you know when a condom is safe to use, or when it is no longer a safe protection method. Old condoms can break apart or rip during use, which increases the risk for pregnancy or STD infection.
Breakage Problems
Using condoms successfully is really easy, but applying the wrong type of lubrication is probably one of the most common errors that leads to breakage and condom failure. Lubricants should be waterbased because other types of lubricants can cause the condom to break. Spermicide also works fine as a lubricant and offers extra protection from pregnancy and disease.
Cost
Male condoms are readily available and inexpensive.
Overcoming Resistance
There are few drawbacks to the male condom. Some men feel that condoms reduce the pleasure of sex. There are ways to reduce this problem, such as switching to a thinner or textured condom, or adding lubrication to the inside of the condom. Others might think that stopping to put on a condom interrupts the mood, but condoms can be incorporated into your lovemaking. Putting a condom on your partner can be sensual and part of what you do together before intercourse.
