The Female Condom
What is a Female Condom?
The Female Condom is a thin plastic sheath that fits inside the vagina, lining the vaginal walls. The inner ring holds the condom in place and the outer ring rests outside the vagina, protecting the vulva.
How effective is the Female Condom?
Like many methods of contraception, the Female Condom is more effective when used correctly and consistently. If always used correctly every time you have sex, 5 out of 100 women using the Female Condom will become pregnant each year.
Will the Female Condom protect against STDs?
The Female Condom, like the male condom, provides very good protection against most STDs when used correctly every time you have sex.
What about Convenience?
The Female Condom is a very convenient contraceptive method. Just keep some in your night stand so they are readily available when you are going to have sex. The Female Condom is easy to insert and they are relatively inexpensive compared to some other contraceptive methods. Female Condoms should not be re-used; a new Female Condom should be used for each act of intercourse. Also, it’s important that a male condom not be used at the same time as the Female Condom as this is likely to cause one or both of the condoms to tear. Some couples say that the female condom is more sensitive for both partners, making sex more enjoyable.
How can I get a Female Condom?
The Female Condom can be bought without a prescription in drugstores, pharmacies, some supermarkets, and in family planning clinics. This makes it easier to obtain than many other contraceptive methods.
