The Contraceptive Sponge

What is a Contraceptive Sponge?

The Contraceptive Sponge is a small, donut-shaped foam sponge about 2 inches in diameter containing a spermicide, with a nylon loop at the bottom for removal. It is inserted deep into the vagina right before having intercourse. It prevents pregnancy by covering the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus, and it releases spermicide that prevents sperm from moving and reaching an egg.

How effective is the Sponge?

Like all contraceptive methods, the Contraceptive Sponge is most effective when used correctly. It is also more effective for women who have never given birth. For women who have never experienced a vaginal birth, 9 out of 100 women using the sponge will become pregnant each year. For women who have given birth, 20 women using the sponge will become pregnant each year.

Will the Sponge protect against STDs?

No. To protect against STDs, you will need to use either a male and female condom along with the sponge.

What about Convenience?

One of the advantages of the Contraceptive Sponge is that it can be inserted up to 24 hours before sexual intercourse. It is then left in place for at least six hours after intercourse. No breaking the mood, and the ability to plan way in advance makes this a great method for some women.

How can I get the Sponge?

The Contraceptive Sponge can be purchased without a prescription at some family planning clinics and on some health-related websites. While a popular and effective method of contraception, the manufacturer of the contraceptive sponge has gone out of business. Unless another manufacturer emerges, this method may not be available when current supplies run out.
