How to Use the Diaphragm

The diaphragm requires a visit to your health care provider for a fitting, and subsequent visits for refitting after a pregnancy.

1. Fill the dome of the diaphragm with one teaspoon of spermicidal cream or jelly; spread the spermicidal around the inside and rim of the diaphragm.

2. Find a comfortable position — stand with one foot on a stool or a chair, sit cross-legged or lie down; the diaphragm may be inserted immediately prior to intercourse or several hours before having intercourse.

3. Squeeze the sides of the diaphragm together; insert it into the vagina, pushing down and back as far as it will go.

4. Check to make sure the diaphragm is properly placed; you should be able to feel your cervix through the dome of the diaphragm. The rim of the diaphragm should rest just behind your pubic bone.

5. Keep the diaphragm in place for at least 6 hours but no longer than 24 hours after sexual intercourse. To remove it, place your finger under the rim and pull down and out, being careful not to puncture it with your fingernail. Wash the diaphragm with warm water and soap, carefully blot it dry or air dry, and place it inside the protective case.
